Requirements Elicitation for Projects

Why attend a program on Requirements Elicitation?

Business analysts, operational staff and software developers deliver better outcomes when they have a shared understanding of the problems they intend to resolve and the requirements for their project. Whether the project is systems or business process focused, the project must satisfy the intended purpose of the organisation and the end users. Often projects fail to deliver these outcomes as a direct result of the difficulties experienced in eliciting the true business requirements. This program will provide participants with a toolkit of elicitation techniques and understanding that will develop the true business requirements for any project.

Why Elicit? Why not Gather?

Your business' requirements aren't just lying around waiting to be gathered. Often your end users don't know what they don't know and even more often, they think they know exactly what needs to happen to satisfy their needs (they come to you with their solution already in mind).

Elicit means to bring out or draw forth and that's what this course is all about. How to engage your stakeholders to bring out the root cause(s) to their problems and draw forth their true business requirements.

Course Guide:

Day 1: Facilitating with Empathy – Requirements Elicitation and Problem
Definition
• How elicitation relates to projects
• How your personal style impacts others
• How to quickly identify the personal styles of others
• Effective communication
• Overview of Elicitation Techniques
• Facilitating discussions that elicit the discussion ‘gems’
• Driving out problem statements

Day 2 (half-day): Creative Innovation and Ideation
• Root cause analysis
• How to facilitate ideation sessions
• Convergent thinking – gathering consensus on a way forward

This second half-day is highly recommended given the nature of the

to emphasise that facilitation is essential for not just gathering requirements but
also in subsequent steps of root cause analysis, brainstorming for solutions and
garnering stakeholder consensus.
